From 21 to 27 September the „Handmade in Germany Worldtour“ stopped in Beijing, China. Alongside other contemporary high-quality products from German manufactories, artisans and designers, SARAH JOHANN bags were presented during Beijing Design Week 2017 at the distinguished international Beijing Contemporary Art Museum.

Handmade in Germany Worldtour – Review Tianjin

Work | Sep 13 | No Comments

Earlier this year I was asked by Direktorenhaus Berlin to be part of the Handmade in Germany Worldtour – an international exhibition presenting a selection of contemporary high-quality products from 180 Germany manufactories, artisans and designers, such as Faber Castell, Rosenthal, Leuchtturm or Frau Tonis Parfum.

Our first stop was Tianjin, China, during Tianjin International Design Week from 13 to 17 May. The exhibition took place at the Beijing Cultural and Creative Park in an ancient building that combines traditional Chinese architecture and modern interior design. It started with an opening event – attended by a political delegation with representatives of the city and district government. Further lectures and talks gave a comprehensive overview of German design history.

Next stop of the tour will be Beijing, during Beijing Design Week 2017, 21-25 September.

Inspirational Retreat

Work | Aug 31 | No Comments

This year the time for vacation is a bit limited. So I was more than happy that we managed to go to Switzerland in August. We spent a wonderful week at the cottage of our friend, Swiss artist Andrea Wolfensberger, and her family near Basel. For a Berlin resident the quietness and beauty of this landscape was maximum relaxation for all senses. And so necessary to recharge batteries for the upcoming Autumn/Winter season.

That week is full of nice memories: Long walks, hikes through the Faltenjura, good food and talks, seeing Wolfgang Tillmans’ solo show at Fondation Beyeler…  All in all, the perfect combination of nature, art and lovely people around.

Here are some impressions:

And some snapshots from Andrea Wolfensberger’s studio:

SARAH JOHANN for Tilo Schulz

Work | Okt 25 | No Comments

I’m really happy to present my latest side project: a custom-made bag for the special book edition „Schritt, zwischen“ by German artist Tilo Schulz.

The book was made about his installation at Haus der Kunst in Munich where Schulz built a copy of the original exhibition space out of a dark material and turned the space about 18°. A specifically written poetic text was installed as an audio piece. The book consists of a 10“ vinyl record, 5 leporellos and an introduction, all found in a beautiful slipcase. It was published by Verlag für moderne Kunst, sponsored by Federkiel and designed by talented graphic designer Ulrike von Dewitz.

For the book release I was asked to create a limited bag edition. I meant to seize the image of the shifted space and developed the idea of a double bag where both cases relate to and depend on each other. One case contains the main book and a second case with a press button is designed for the vinyl record. Both bags are sewn on top of each other slightly shifted. The black cotton canvas and the silk-screen printed label create a nice contrast to the petrol blue of the book.

I’m happy to present a new FINSE special edition, which I exclusively designed for NEWNIQ, the fabulous German crowdbuying design shop.

The backpack comes in a combination of fine calf leather and durable black denim, which produces an exciting haptic contrast and creates a classy and easy look at the same time. A small inner pocket gives space for odds and ends.

You can preorder this beauty here until November 23. With 3 orders it goes into production.

The story behind… the PAJALA

Work | Sep 14 | No Comments

Each bag of my launch collection has its own little story. There was always a certain reason why I came up with exactly this or that design, and, of course, I always underwent a few stages from the idea to a reproducible product.

So I thought, I should share these little stories and give you a closer look on my beloved bags.

First I’m gonna start with the PAJALA backpack. Actually, this one was the first bag that made it into my launch collection. I had the idea of a bag for myself, that can be carried by hand or on the back – as I take my bike quite often. It should be suitable for laptops and other documents, but it shouldn’t be too stiff. Very minimalistic, made of cotton canvas, but at the same time not too sporty. As I’m a huge fan of the combination grey and white, I ended up with a light grey canvas and white poly-straps.

This canvas I used for the prototype was too soft though. Luckily I stepped over the beautiful salt and pepper canvas, which is seen in my whole collection. It’s just perfect – durable and at the same time with a nice and soft grip. To give this very minimalistic bag a subtle and unexpected contrast, I integrated a blue and white checked cotton lining. The inner compartment for laptops or other material was adjusted several times, as well, until the prototype was ready to reproduce. At the end of the optimization process, the PAJALA became the bag with the longest production time of my collection. It’s made out of 42 individual parts, all handcrafted with love for detail and precision. It also comes in a grey/black combination, and a whole black version is in the making.

So, all in all, I am more than happy with the result of this puristic and sophisticated backpack and I use it a lot by myself. Of course, it looks good on boys, too!

One last question remains. Why did I name it PAJALA? Well, as you might have noticed, all my bags are named after certain Scandinavian cities or towns. Either places I’ve already been to or places I have a certain connection with. The little town Pajala in the very North of Sweden is such a place.
